Home technology expert Ross Trethewey tells us about how he became an engineer. While growing up under the wings of his grandfather and father, Ross learned what the plumbing trade entailed. But, he was always more interested in the future of plumbing and heating, leading him to a degree in mechanical engineering and a role on the This Old House team. Ross explains that after growing up immersed in the world of plumbing, heating, and air conditioning, he followed his love for how things work to a degree in mechanical engineering. His degree and passion have taken him all over and provided unique experiences. Next, we meet host Kevin O’Connor and general contractor Tom Silva back at the shop for some hammer talk. With an array of hammers laid out in front of them, Tom walks Kevin through the different types of hammers, what they’re typically used for, and their strengths and weaknesses. Tom even explains how to choose the best handle, when to use a smooth face over a waffled face, and a nifty built-in feature for one-handed nail setting. Kevin then meets plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey for a run-down on common plumbing emergencies and how homeowners can control them. Richard explains some of the important valves that homeowners should be aware of and some techniques for emergency water stoppages. Finally, Richard shows Kevin a basic kit of fittings that most homeowners should consider putting together for emergency leaks. Lastly, carpenter Nathan Gilbert makes a house call to help a homeowner replace her overhead garage door. After explaining some of the safety concerns to be aware of, Nathan and the homeowner get to work removing the existing garage door one section at a time. With the old door out of the opening, Nathan shows the homeowner the different parts and components they’ll use for the new door. The two then attach the hardware and install the new door one section at a time, capping it off by attaching it to the garage door opener, installing some trim, and testing the new door.
